PDF

spanish wine

Spanish Wine includes wine, Sherry and Brandy. Over the past 50 years, Spain has emerged from the doldrums of the Franco years to become one of Europe's leading wine producers. In 1970, the government set up the structure of the Denominaciones de Origen (DOs). These were based on the 17 autonomous regions. More than half Spains' wines today have a DO classification.

In 1986 when Spain along with Portugal joined the EU, the Wine industry was eligible for development grants as well as being subject after this to EU regulations.

Wine production in Spain is divided into seven geographical zones.

Galicia is the smallest of these regions primarily the Basque region and is famous for its fish. Wines are generally light and white. Major wines include Choli and Albarino.

Navarra Wine have made significant progress in recent years. Its reds are considered very superior and is expected to challenge Rioja in quality in the future. It also makes fine white wines. The grapes are Tempranillo Cabernet

The plateau of Castile is the source of one of the old fine wines in Spain  - Vega Sicilia

Andalucia also has a great Wine producing tradition with Sherry the most important product. The Southern quarter of Spain is the sherry producing region of Spain

The Valencia to Alicante region is not a great wine region but investment could improve that which is the old story of Spanish wine. Lack of investment has meant that the Country's productivity is not what it could be

The Maseta region south of Madrid is another major wine producing region and the DO La Mancha the foremost.

There are lots of Bodegas in which to enjoy the wines of Spain during your La Manga Club Vacation
