Murcia is an autonomous region in the South East of Spain with a population of 1.2 million of which one-third live in the Capital Murcia. Murcia city straddles the Segura river which has in the past been heavily polluted. It has also flooded the city several times.

The region is surrounded by mountain ranges – The Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo

Murcia City dates back to 820AD when it was founded by a Moorish emir. The area has long been famous for its orchards. The climate of the region is semi-arid but also has Mediterranean influences. Like La Manga Club it has over 300 days a year of sunshine.

In the 18th Century Murcia was the centre of the booming Silk industry.

The City suffered many mishaps though from Flooding, Invasion by Napolianic troups in 1810, a major earthquake in 1829 and bouts of plague and cholera.

In 1838, Murcia was made capital of the Murcia Region.

Famous sites include the Cathedral, The town hall, the puente de los Pelegro (its oldest bridge), The Casa Cerda and the famous Casino of Murcia. The old town which is mainly a pedestrian walkway is worth visiting. There are other places of interest close to Murcia City including the Santa Clara Monastery, La Fuensanta Sanctuary, The Almudi Palace and the Monteagudo Castle. There are three Art galleries in Murcia City and many small shops to browse.

Lunch on pavement cafes is also a treat

The Holy Week festival before Easter is worth seeing. There is also a week of celebrations after Easter. Each May there is a celebration of the Three Cultures with Music exhibitions and conferences.

Although not a noted area for wine production, Murcia has 100k acres of vineyard with the area around the Jumilla plateau the best known. The Murcia region has become a centre for Northern Europeans to settle with a second home and tax laws are designed to facilitate that.
