Climate in La Manga

 dsc1331 2

Climate in La Manga:  The weather in La Manga Club is in a word fantastic. The whole of the Cost Calida area is one of the driest places in Europe. Indeed the problem for la Manga Climate is one of too little water and so conservation is a very important issue.

Rainfall is very low - for instance in the August is practically Zero. Even in the winter it can be a problem. The area enjoys 325 days of sunshine a year on average making it perfect for la Manga Vacation Rentals - but!

The Costa Calida area is one of the salad bowls of Spain and Europe. Lettuce is a very important crop and of course needs plenty of water. This combined with the growth of Golf courses in the area has set the needs of La Manga into a collision course with conservationists.

In Spain there is good rainfall but unlike the elecution lesson it is mainly in the North. Northern parts of Spain have fought hard to prevent their natural rainfall being stored and given to the South for uses such as Golf Courses. As we have found in the UK, it is very expensive to ship water over many miles.

La Manga Club has led the way in consevation of precious water. Gardens have been replanted with drought tolerant plants and irrigation with fresh water is kept to a minimum.  la Manga Water is charged for at a high rate; the golf courses are watered with grey water and leaks are tracked down and quickly dealt with.

It became a major political issue at the Spanish General Election before now. With the North backed Socialists winning control the freedom of Southerners to use water from the North was constrained. It was argued by the North that the South should use more grey water to irrigate their salad crops a proposal which was fought bitterly by the Southern Politicians. With the recent ecoli outbreak in Northern Europe resulting in the finger being unfairly pointed at Spanish Cucumber growers with devastating effect, it can be appreciated as to how important a political issue it is.

Although la Manga water supply is always tight in the Cost Calida Region, weather in La Manga is still a fantastic boon. The long sunny summer attracts sportsmen and women from all over the world to play tennis, golf, watersports and many other sports. Added to that the balmy evenings for el fresco dining and you can understand why La Manga Villa holidays are so popular. In la Manga Waterskiing does not need a wetsuit with the water temperature in la Manga Spain always in the high teens in the Summer months.

Despite the fact that the area is so dry the amount of irrigated land is incredible. Mile after mile of salad crops are grown throughout the year. The Market garden - huertas de la manga - are thriving
